In the example you have left€362The day before payday, 14 days from today: 37% of today’s balance.

Start from today’s balance, take off the commitments still to go out and an estimate of everyday spending for the days remaining. With €980 in your account, €310 coming up and 14 days at an average spend of €22: €362 at the end of the cycle.

The calculation

today’s balance − upcoming fixed commitments − (average daily spend × days remaining).

“Month end” here means the day before your next payday: it is the moment the money has to have lasted until, not the last day of the calendar month.

How to estimate average daily spending

Add up your everyday spending over the last 30 days, leaving out instalments, subscriptions and exceptional expenses, and divide by 30. Example: €660 ÷ 30 = €22 a day.

An example with numbers

There are 14 days to your next payday.

ItemAmount
Today’s balance€980
Upcoming fixed commitments−€310
Everyday spending: 14 × €22−€308
Left at end of cycle€362

If average spending rises to €30 a day, the result falls to €250. The estimate is only as good as the average it starts from: a week of unusual spending will shift it.

What not to count

Salary that hasn’t arrived yet: until it is in your account, it isn’t a balance. If you want to work out the next cycle too, do it separately, starting from the day it comes in. Don’t count uncertain refunds either.

When to recalculate

Once a week, or after an out-of-the-ordinary expense. The calculation is simple, but the numbers change every day. To have the daily figure ready-made, see how much I can spend a day.

How MoneyLeft does it

The bar on Home has three segments: what you have already spent, what is about to be charged and what you really have left. It updates with every transaction, and upcoming commitments are already subtracted. The simulator shows what would be left at the end of the cycle if you made a certain purchase today, before you make it. MoneyLeft Pro (paid subscription) adds a net worth forecast for the following twelve months, calculated on your typical variable spending, plus the instalments and subscriptions still to be paid, typical income and transactions already recorded. Forecasts are calculations on your own numbers, not financial advice.
